Dentures sometimes referred to as “false teeth,” are a removable appliance that is designed to replace one or more missing teeth. Dentures can be made of metal, plastic, or porcelain. However, today dentures are typically made from acrylic resin-based plastics with a metal framework for durability. They are designed to fit snugly in your mouth and to look natural.

Dentures are designed for patients who have lost all of their teeth or some of their teeth. They are not typically recommended for people who only suffer from gum recession and other common tooth problems. Denture wearers must have their dentures checked regularly by their dentist or dental professionals. Many things can affect how well a denture fits, such as tooth decay, gum disease, jaw bone deterioration, and tooth loss.

The first step of applying dentures is to create a mold of the patient’s mouth; this mold will then be used to make the denture teeth that will fill in where there are gaps in their natural teeth. After this, impressions of their gums and lips will be taken which will form the base for the silicone material needed to create a mold for their dentures.

The process of applying dentures for a patient is quite simple and doesn’t usually take up much time. Generally, there are four steps to this process:

• The dentist will remove any remaining natural teeth that may be present
• Extract any remaining tooth roots with the help of the dentist’s assistant
• Place the custom created denture on the patient’s gums
• Place straps on either side of the head to hold the denture in place.
