Root canal treatment is a procedure that removes infected or damaged tissue from inside a tooth. During root canal therapy, infections or decay that has penetrated all the way to the nerve are removed.

This can often be done with a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure where only a small opening is required. The dentist will numb the area before taking out the infected tissues and then fill it up with a sealant to prevent further infections.

A root canal treatment is typically done using the following steps:

• The tooth is given an anesthetic and the surrounding pulp tissue is removed.

• The canals are filled with gutta-percha, or similar material, to hold the space.
• The tooth root surface may be smoothed with an instrument called a file or burr, which helps fill any irregularities in the interior shape of the root canal.
• A crown may be put over the top of the filling to protect your tooth from breaking and help it look natural again.
